I find it very difficult to face the news recently – whether it’s on the TV or in the papers – I simply can’t bear the world’s suffering.
But, there was one piece of news recently that put a smile on my face; the story of goodwilled commuters in Perth, Australia.
Passengers and staff joined forces at Stirling station and managed to tilt a carriage when a man’s leg became trapped between the platform and the train.
As a result of people pulling together and acting quickly, the man was freed without any serious injuries.
This story shows us what great things can be achieved when we work together. “No man is an island”, one man alone would not have been able to tilt the carriage and free the man’s leg.
Here’s to people power and working better together.
“No man is an Island”
By John Donne
No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend’s
Or of thine own were:
Any man’s death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
