An extraordinarily compelling and thought provoking presentation on “Changing Education Paradigms”, affecting all aspects of Society. It’s by Sir Ken Robinson, the world renowned Education & Creativity Expert, and was delivered as part of the Royal Society of Arts Lecture Series on 21st Century Enlightenment.
It’s a great piece of communication in itself that’s highly recommended and well worth a watch. Also, though, it’s one of the best examples of the use of slides / pictures / animation to enhance a Presentation that I’ve seen in a long while.
As human beings we like to “think in pictures”. A good piece of communication, if well paced, well crafted and well delivered, helps us to think the ‘right pictures’. People are hard-wired, simply by virtue of being human, to want not only to be told stories but also to be involved in them. To see pictures.
Good communication is all about good storytelling (and, of course, the opposite is also true). What the Animator does so excellently in this example is to ‘illustrate’ (quite literally!) the pictures that we need to be thinking in order to understand the communication completely. The illustrations therefore completely enhance the Presentation.
Words and pictures working in perfect harmony. Think how often in corporate life you’ve experienced “Death by Powerpoint” or decided to “Make a note to kill myself on Keynote” and you’ll appreciate how rarely you see this happening.
